I have two main believes in the sport of triathlon;
1 - Race off "feel"
Now don't get me wrong i love my Garmin XT 910 as much as the next guy, and use it to record all training sessions, "B" and "C" races but i just think that when it comes to your "A" race you should just focus on how you feel. Lets be honest when we are flat out racing we dont need a Garmin to tell you that your HR is at >180 b.min-1 do we? I think that when you feel good go out there and smash it and when your struggling just reign it back a bit. After all the whole point of a race is surely to get from A to B as fast as possible and on those rare days where you're flying you don't want to be held back by a training aid!
Forgive me but this might just be my naivety of being a short course athlete. I'm yet to still race Ironman or Ironman 70.3 and as soon as i do i'm sure my view will change very quickly!! ha
2 - Keep your toe in racing during the winter/off season
I find that my body really struggles if it doesn't go into "the red" for a while so during the winter/off season i'm a huge fan of racing once a month. In addition to the physiological benefit i find i get i also think that single-sport races help in sharpening race-specific skills and lets be honest racing against pure single-sport athletes is great motivation.
